What if I told you… that this major tax firm might be tricking you into paying more money than you need to?

You probably wouldn’t be that surprised, but let’s dive into what’s going on either way.

The FTC has filed a complaint against H&R block alleging that they “designed its online products to present an obstacle course of tedious challenges to consumers, pressuring them into overpaying for its products”

Examples of this include requiring customers to speak to a support agent if they want to downgrade to a cheaper product, forcing customers through time consuming challenges if they choose lower priced offerings, and deleting all of their previously entered tax info if they do downgrade, forcing them to enter it all again. The FTC also adds that H&R block commercials are misleading for their promotion of free services, which are very limited.

Of course H&R block insists that they are operating with “fair and transparent” pricing.

In a 2020 report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office, they found that 70% of Americans qualify to file their taxes for free, but only 3% of them actually take advantage of it.
